Is Dating on a Social Network Possible?

For years, online dating sites have been the only alternative for people who, for a variety of reasons, were not able to, or did not want to meet people in the “real” world. These sites do a good job and have brought together millions of people who would otherwise have been alone. But the advent and rapid growth of social networking sites has posed a challenge to the traditional online dating ones. Sites like Facebook, MySpace and the others have millions of members all looking to expand their social networks and establish links to like minded people who share the same interests and opinions.

The fact that these social networking sites have such huge memberships often leads people into thinking that dating on a social network site gives one the best chances of finding a date. Unfortunately, it is the very size and diversity of the sites that that creates problems for those whose main goal is to find a date. People join these sites for all kinds of reasons and the most common is to either make new friends or find lost ones. Many members may say that there are interested in dating, but their seriousness is open to question – often it is just said to keep their options open and not as a priority. Even those who may have become members with the aim dating on the social network often find other types of relationships and interests and dating is relegated to a low priority, despite that fact that their profile may indicate otherwise.

That is why a person joining a social networking site with the sole object of dating comes across some serious problems. The huge number of members means that, even with all the search options available, finding a potential date is not easy. Even if a possible date is found and contact established, it may turn out that the person is no longer on the site for dating but has found other interests.

On the other hand, a dedicated dating site will have members whose sole objective is finding a date so their priorities are established. While finding the right person may still not be easy and there are problems like misleading profiles and predators to contend with, at least you can be reasonably sure that the person you are in touch with has joined the site for the same reason as you have – to find a date. This makes the search easier and more likely to achieve positive results. To allow members to know more about each other many online dating sites now allow links to social networking sites – this is the best option.
